WHO ARE WE?

The Ashesi Design Lab, or D:Lab, is one of Ashesi’s newest and most exciting initiatives. Founded in September, 2015, the D:Lab specializes in applying design thinking - a powerful problem-solving tool - to complex problems in our community, our society, and our world. Also known as human-centred design, design thinking is all about focusing on "end users," or the people most directly affected by the problems we look at. By putting people first, our solutions can better meet the needs of these people, the environment, and society in our interconnected world.

The beauty of the D:Lab is its diversity. Our in-house projects focus on a diverse range of innovative, emerging technologies, ranging from high-tech research in the agriculture sector to reinventing and reimagining social spaces on campus and everything in between. We also support student and faculty-driven projects at Ashesi and act as consultants for a range of industry-driven projects in Ghana.

The D:Lab is highly student-driven. Ashesi students play central roles in the D:Lab as they work on, lead, and introduce projects. As well as being an exciting and fun on-campus group to be a part of, the D:Lab gives students meaningful opportunities for personal and professional development. The skills and experience that they gain through their work with the D:Lab sets them apart as creative, capable problem-solvers. Some of Ashesi’s top student leaders have spent time with the D:Lab, and often find that their time with the D:Lab leads to new and exciting opportunities as they graduate, enter the job market, and network with professional colleagues.
