Summer 2023 at Ashesi D: Lab: Innovation, Progress, and a Glimpse into the Future!

The D: Lab summer mobile program unfolded from June through July, setting the stage for a whirlwind of innovation and discovery. This dynamic season saw our students embarking on projects biweekly, allowing them not only to test their ideas but also to embrace the program's flexibility, making it accessible to those juggling internships and busy schedules. With over 20 students working tirelessly across 10 inspiring projects, this summer was destined for greatness.

The Active Game Project:

One of our standout ventures was the Active Game Project, led by a team of passionate Kenyans. Their mission? To bring the gift of good health and well-being right to people's doorsteps through affordable games. Their journey led them to conduct immersive research in their homeland, engaging with stakeholders, gathering data, and pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible. While their physical reach was limited, the impact of their findings reached far and wide. An unexpected revelation emerged: the data collected from the Kenyan market mirrored the trends in the distant Ghanaian market, reinforcing the universality of their vision.

The Flood Project:

In another corner of our vibrant program, the Flood Project navigated the challenges of raising awareness about bioswales. In their quest to uncover stakeholders' perspectives, they encountered a surprising roadblock: many locals were illiterate, making traditional communication ineffective. As they persevered, internal conflicts tested their mettle, but through unity and determination, they triumphed. Tracy, their team lead, reflects, "Team engagement was a challenge, but we emerged stronger."

The Electric Vehicle Project:

Meanwhile, the Electric Vehicle Project embarked on a thrilling technical journey. Their quest for perfection in electric mobility led them to the prototyping and testing stage. Along the way, they identified faults, and with the guidance of electrical experts and past team members, they took on the challenges head-on. As one motor refused to cooperate, they launched into a deeper analysis, a true testament to the design thinking process that fuels their passion.

The Machine Learning Project:

In parallel, the Machine Learning Project wielded its skills and knowledge to craft an advanced recommender system. The successfully completed this and during the summer they explored how their system could extend its reach beyond movies. Their creation promises to revolutionize the media industry. It's an ode to innovation and the boundless possibilities that come with it.

The Precision Seeder:

The Precision Seeder project is at the forefront of an agricultural revolution, sowing the seeds of change with the noble aim of nurturing sustainable livelihoods for small and medium-scale grain farmers. While grappling with the challenges of securing skilled workers and sourcing essential components, they have forged ahead with unwavering determination, achieving remarkable milestones. Notably, they have successfully completed the controller design for their seed meter, and their efforts have culminated in the fabrication of approximately 80% of the planting unit frame, marking significant progress in their journey.

Ecomaze Pads:

"Every girl deserves equitable access to quality, affordable sanitary pads." This resounding commitment fuels the passion of the Ecomaze team, united in their mission to eliminate period poverty. Their innovative biodegradable pads, crafted from maize husks, align perfectly with the ideals of Sustainable Development Goal 13. Through rigorous research and the implementation of an effective field research protocol, they are forging a path toward transformation. As they embark on the next leg of their journey, the team is poised to transition into the prototyping and testing phase. Here, they will put their products to the test, assessing both usability and sustainability, ensuring that their vision of accessible and environmentally responsible menstrual hygiene becomes a reality.

The Cryptocurrency Project:

In the world of cryptocurrency, the NFT team established an Official Gnosis vault, a fortress to secure their project's valuable data and assets. They ventured into the OpenSea marketplace, expanding their reach, and minting digital assets into blockchain NFTs, adding an unassailable layer of security and authenticity.

ChatGPT:

ChatGPT is currently at the center of tech conversations, and our team dove headfirst into exploring its potential impact. This ground-breaking project seeks to uncover the influence of ChatGPT on the academic space and its effectiveness in education. Through rigorous research, they unveiled a rich tapestry of opportunities and threats. Overcoming hurdles, they navigated the challenge of gathering honest opinions and fostering cooperation within the team.

The AI Beehive Project:

Shifting our focus to nature's architects, the AI Beehive Project delved into managing beehives with cutting-edge technology. Their journey took them through understanding the intricate lives of bees, empathizing with beekeepers, and researching IoT systems. Currently, they stand on the brink of bringing their ideas to life during the prototyping and testing phase.

Instagram Training:

Finally, the Accra Arts Center's Instagram training program led by the IG Training Team underwent an introspective analysis of its impact over the past two semesters. While challenges existed, the team's commitment shone through, onboarding over 20 artisans during the summer break. Their vision extends to creating an Instagram presence that not only boosts sales but also empowers local artisans.

As the sun sets on this exhilarating summer journey, one thing is clear: the D:Lab summer mobile program is a crucible of innovation, determination, and inspiration. From healthcare and agriculture to cryptocurrency and AI, our students are the driving force behind transformative change. Their stories reflect resilience in the face of challenges, unity amid diversity, and a shared vision of a brighter future. With each project, they are shaping the world we'll all inhabit tomorrow. Here's to a summer well spent, forging a path toward a brighter, more innovative future.
