D:LAB MOBILE SUMMER 2021: THE MOUNTED PROJECT. (UPDATED)

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Mounted Squadron of the Ghana Police Force presents one of the most prideful processions during presidential ceremonies. Yet, their engagement with the public is rarely seen after such ceremonial displays. In other countries, mounted police play a part in inner city policing, crowd control, field patrols, intelligence gathering and facilitation of engagement with the public who would normally not approach the police. On Oxford Street, London UK, mounted police are a common sight. Why not on Oxford Street, Osu? While targeting the tourism sector as well, this project seeks to support an identified private sector partner with business modelling and minimum viable project testing for service packages in the areas of carriage tours, beach riding, private events and training.

ABOUT THE MENTOR

Aqua Stephen is a graphic designer, CEO, and design enthusiast. His mentorship and creative skills will be applied to the Mounted Project via the design and implementation of Police carriage tours in Osu.

ABOUT THE TEAM

There are three committed students on this team. We caught up with the student team leader, Ayeyi Mills-Robertson to explore his expectations for the project.

"I hope to acquire background knowledge on the police task force, and the problems they face."

THE JOURNEY

June 10th 2021

The project was opened to international proposals on the 10th of June 2021. Interested artists and design thinkers submitted their ideas for horse-carriage models via this application link: http://bit.ly/osucarriage

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, launched a horse- drawn carriage design challenge in Accra. The Launch, held at Ridge in Accra, brought together representatives from the Design and Technology Institute, Accra Technical Univeristy, Accra Technical Training Centre, and the Oxford Business Owners Association to discuss the requirements of the project and the expectations of the partners.

PILOTING

The concept was piloted in Osu. In attendance was the MP for Korle-Klottey constituency, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings. From this pilot, curious insights were gained. from the implementation of a pilot in Osu presented a curious situation that resulted in the customer need for horse-drawn carriages would make use of a different supplier of horses and carriages.

Keeping these insights in mind the need for customer understanding became a more significant aspect of the solution.
