The project, which is in collaboration with Derry Wayne, a Business Administration faculty intern, is set to create a grassroot innovative approach to managing plastic waste by redefining the value of plastic waste as key raw materials for needful social interventions. For instance, using plastic waste to create school furniture for less endowed community schools in deprived settings.
Plastic waste is a global epidemic and feeds directly into current dire worldwide problems such as climate change. The name of the project was inspired by a general knowledge that a good sitting posture contributes positively to rapt attention, which is needed for learning in any teaching and learning environment. Using the Berekuso Basic School to test and pilot the prototypes, the team has successfully completed a low-fi and high-fi prototypes.
The first low-fi prototype was for a proof of concept, while the second, the high-fi prototype, tested whether the plastic bags could be used to create models envisioned. The main objective moving forward is to step-down the production process into a safer, easy-to-make method.
