The Design Lab has always served as a hub for nurturing innovation and creativity, with support being given to individuals in the Ashesi community who are passionate about making an impact in society. This avenue has, for years, been open to students and teachers alike.
The above was true for Ashesi alum and Business Administration lecturer, Rose Dodd. For Rose Dodd, that passion was the plight of the children of Kayayei, the head porters found in Madina market. While the national conversation centers on Kayayei and how best to tackle the issues forcing them into that line of work, Rose Dodd and a team of students from Ashesi were concerned about tackling the problem it was creating, that was, the lack of proper development of the children borne by these mothers.
So, with her team of Ashesi students, and a series of planning sessions backed by the Ashesi Design Lab, the Kaya ChildCare Center was born. The team was able to obtain a grant from the Ford Foundation to carry out the project. Currently, the center runs four days in a week, with a schedule that fits the tight schedule of the mothers.
